Obituary for Mat Stockinger Jr.

Crystal Falls – Mat Stockinger, Jr, 94, of Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away Thursday, June 11, 2020 at Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, Mich.

He was born on February 8, 1926, in Flint, Mich., son of Mat, Sr. and Lucy Stockinger. Mat grew up in Holly, Mich., and served in the US Army during WWII in Germany. After getting out of the Army in 1950, he returned to his family in the Durango, Colo., area where he worked as an Engineer for the State of Colorado highway department. He then moved back to Michigan where he spent the rest of his career as a Sr. Engineer for highway department, residing in Crystal Falls where he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Lutheran church in Crystal Falls. As a hobbyist lapidarian, he was well known for his creative ability to find and cut stones and create some of the most exquisite jewelry.

Survivors include his daughters, Carol (Duane) Luedecking, Portage, Mich., Pat (Dave) Noble, Newburgh, Ind., Pam Larson, Chicago, Ill., Rita Semke, Ishpeming, Mich.; and son Max (Jill) Stockinger, Sacramento, Calif.; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mat was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years Lillian in 2014; two sons, Kurt and Karl; daughter Ann; brothers George and James; sisters Dixie, Katherine, Beatrice, and Donna; sons-in-law Chuck Karnack, Lee Larson and Rick Semke; grandson Charles Karnack, Jr.; great grandson Justin Karnack, Jr.; and granddaughter Jessie Rose Gibson.

In accordance with Mat’s wishes, private family services will be held.
