Obituary for Mark Angeli
Iron Mountain- Mark Angeli, 85, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, Mich.
He was born August 20, 1935, in Iron River, Mich., son of the late Alfred Sr. and Elvira (Manci) Angeli. Mark grew up in Iron River and was a graduate of Iron River High School. He went on to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Mark was a member of the United States Marine Corps, rising to the rank of sergeant. He also joined the Peace Corps, spending two years in Tunisia, Africa, toiling to bring a better life to the local inhabitants.
From an early age, Mark was taught the grocery business working diligently at the family business, Angeli Food, founded in 1917. But it was at the family farm where Mark earned his greatest education in caring for the animals, the land, and his family. Mark had the good pleasure of traveling the United States delivering cattle and quarter horses to the far reaches of the contiguous U.S. The values learned throughout the years allowed Mark to teach his sons the value of hard work, honesty, and integrity. One source of great pride was Mark’s efforts to bring a championship-style rodeo to Iron County. That dream was realized on August 10/11, 1968, when the Iron River Championship Rodeo was held at the fairgrounds.
Mark was a tireless worker in the family business as well as his own grocery store, Warehouse Foods, located in Kingsford. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed his later years with Dee by his side. Mark certainly enjoyed a good western film, a murder mystery, documentaries, and of course, the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. He was a huge supporter of the underdog. Mark consistently contributed to Veterans groups, underprivileged children, and Native American tribes across the country.
Mark experienced no greater joy in life than raising his three sons, Gino & Tom Marchetti, Chicago, Ill, and Jeffrey (Landy) Angeli, Los Angeles; with the absolute love of his life, Diane “Dee” Angeli. Mark and Dee lived life to the fullest, enjoying day trips, adventures to visit their boys, and sharing glorious conversations over gourmet meals from Dee’s kitchen.
In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his brothers, Libero, Thomas, Leonard, Richard, and Alfred Jr.; and sisters, Sara, Alba, and Maria, along with his grandson, Missimo.
Dee and her sons spent the final days with Mark and will place some of Mark’s ashes at his favorite place, the Angeli Family Farm, in the summer of 2021. Dee has said that “Despite all of Mark’s successful achievements, his greatest source of pride, were his three sons.”
