Obituary for Kenneth J. Tousignant

The community mourns the loss of Kenneth John Tousignant, whom peacefully passed away at age 56 on October 28th, 2021 surrounded by family and friends. Ken was a shining example of a life fully lived. As a young man, Ken, Governor of Key Club, was an active pillar of his community before graduating from Iron Mountain High School, class of 1983. After completing a degree in Ancient Near Eastern studies from the University of Minnesota, Ken explored other interests in comedy, writing and journalism. Using the dynamic power of his unforgettable voice, Ken stood up for environmental justice with Clean Water Action and fought during the height of the AIDS crisis with Act Up. Upon his return to Iron Mountain, Ken dedicated himself to public service; beginning in 2004, he served two terms as Mayor, the first openly gay Mayor in the State of Michigan. Ken was a transformative visionary, and his years of service continue to bear fruit enjoyed by many in the community. Ken, a beloved entertainer and socialite, was also cherished as a brother, son, and uncle. A true family man, he shared his love through food, music, and the finer elements of culture, but mostly food. Fiercely proud of his culinary might, Ken cut his chops at the French Culinary Institute of New York. In his later years, Ken spent much time in the Milwaukee area, becoming a well-recognized symbol through his force of personality. Ken continued to celebrate and elevate local arts, business, and cuisine.

Survivors include his mother Maddy Tousignant, sister Cindy Tousignant, nephew Zack Tousignant, partner Konrad Cukla, and close friends.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich. The funeral service will be celebrated at 12 Noon at the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Quinn Mann will officiate. Burial will take place in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, Mich.
