Obituary for Kenneth G. Schultz

Iron Mountain- Kenneth G. Schultz, 86, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Sunday, February 25, 2024.

Ken was born April 11, 1937, in Norway, Mich., son of the late Leonard and Rose (Arnoldi) Schultz. He grew up in Hermansville and was a graduate of Hermansville High School class of 1955. Following graduation, he attended Northern Michigan University, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education. Ken started his 30-year teaching career at Felch High School and continued at North Dickinson until his retirement. Many young minds were shaped in Ken’s math, English, or social studies classes. A few behinds were also shaped by his “Green Machine.” Ken chaperoned many senior class trips over the years and formed lasting relationships with his students, players, and peers.

In addition to teaching in the classroom, Ken also taught on the court. Coaching basketball was his passion. He coached JV and middle school at North Dickinson as well as varsity at Kingsford during his teaching days. After retirement, he could be found in the stands – at North Dickinson or any of the area schools if the match-up was good.

Ken also had hobbies and interests outside of school. He was an avid hunter all his life and enjoyed spending time at camp. He liked to trout fish in his “secret creek” and bowled on Wednesday nights for many years. During summer vacation, he would be hitting the links at Oak Crest in Norway or working on his chain saw and lawn mower repair business. He took up bridge – the only card game he liked once he learned it – in his later years. If he wasn’t at a basketball game or camp, you could find him hunting a jackpot at the casino. He assisted with hosting bus trips to the casino for many years and would provide the entertainment by telling jokes or stories.

Ken was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain and sang in church choirs from a very young age until just a few years ago. He also volunteered at the VA, at one time was a member of the Golden K, and was the Director at Camp Sanford.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carol Schultz; daughter, Alicia Schultz; grandson, Nicholas Porzondek; nieces and nephew, Kay, Kris, Steve, Karen, and Tricia; cousins, two cats, and his bleacher and golf buddies.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich.
