Obituary for Kathryn Mary Olson (Breclaw)

Kathryn M. "Kosha" Olson, 83, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away on April 3, 2023. She was born July 27, 1939, in Norway, Mich., the youngest child of Michael and Helen (Schram) Breclaw. Kathryn graduated in 1957 from Vulcan High School, then received her Registered Nursing degree from St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Hancock, Mich.

Following an initial job as a public health nurse in Detroit, Kathryn returned home to begin a 32-year career as an RN at the Oscar B. Johnson VA Medical Center. Even after formal retirement, she stayed busy and engaged as a nurse, finally finishing her career in 2021.

Kathryn's interests were wide-ranging. Throughout her life, she loved to laugh, play golf, travel, spend time with family, sing, and play music. She was a flutist in the Dickinson Community Band and in several local Celtic groups. Kathryn was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford and sang in their choir. She also shared her lovely voice with the Dickinson Community Choir. Kathryn wrote poems and short stories. She especially treasured gatherings with her sisters that revolved around golf, cards, and Scrabble, and was game for travel anywhere, from Vulcan to Venezuela.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents as well as siblings Eugene Breclaw, Theresa Brussell, and Alice Polomis.

She is survived by her son Daniel Olson of Florence, Wisc., and extended families of the Breclaws and Schrams.

To help us honor Kathryn and the joy she brought to our lives, a memorial gathering will be held at Jacobs Funeral Home, 1025 Carpenter Avenue, Iron Mountain, on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 10 a.m. until noon, with a prayer service starting at 11:00 a.m.
