Obituary for Joyce A. O'Krongly (Mattson)
Kingsford- Joyce A. O’Krongly, 87, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away June 8, 2022, at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson, Iron Mountain, Mich.
She was born October 7, 1934, in Ironwood, Mich., daughter of the late Earl and Mary (Laitila) Mattson. Joyce grew up and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood. She married Robert O’Krongly on November 14, 1953, in Milwaukee, Wis. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1991. Joyce worked as a switchboard operator, later as a cashier at Cousins Subs in Milwaukee, as well as an Avon representative for years until she retired. Joyce and Robert resided in Milwaukee for over 50 years. She later moved to Florence, Wis., to be closer to her family. Most recently, she had been residing at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford.
Joyce enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books, cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, volunteering at St. Vincent De Paul in Florence, as well as her numerous pets and outdoor animals.
Survivors include two sons, Robert O’Krongly, Milwaukee, Wis., Jeffrey (Diane) O’Krongly, Mercer, Wis.; three daughters, Mary (Bill) Schmidt, Hayward, Wis., Karen (Rich) Konecny, Milwaukee, Wis., and Christine (Rick) Knepper, Florence, Wis.; one sister, Dolores (Melvin) Luoma, Ironwood, Mich.; nine grandchildren, Jenny, Tim, Sarah, Nikki, Laura, Lydia, R.J., Holly, and William; many great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Robert, Joyce was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas O’Krongly, and an infant son, Joseph O’Krongly; as well as two brothers, Roland and Richard Mattson.
Per Joyce’s wishes, private family services will be held.
