Obituary for Joy K. Hicks (Johns)

Iron Mountain-Joy K. Hicks, age 71, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away Monday, March 18, 2019, at her home.

She was born November 21, 1947, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Jay and Kathleen (Whyte) Johns. Joy grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Cleveland. She was united in marriage to Gerald “Jerry” Hicks on July 22, 1967, in Cleveland. They moved to Kingsford in 1977. Joy worked as a receptionist and was a member of United Methodist Church, Iron Mountain, Mich.

She enjoyed doing crafts, playing bingo, shopping and traveling. Joy was an avid reader, with mysteries and romance stories being her favorite. You could often find her with an Agatha Christie or some romance novel in her hands. She often shared books with the neighbors, passing romance novels throughout the neighborhood. Despite her vision loss, she found comfort in books on tape. She was once again able to enjoy both new and favorite authors. Holidays were her favorite times of the year. She often took pleasure in decorating both the inside and outside of her home. Holidays were special times of the year where friends and family would often visit. Joy especially loved Halloween, where neighborhood children often found all types of goodies waiting for them. She took delight in seeing all the different costumes the children wore. Joy was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as past president of the Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post #50, Iron Mountain.

Survivors include her loving husband, Jerry; one son, Jerry (Bruce Tillberg) Hicks, Westlake, Ohio; two brothers, Ed (Elaine) Johns, Brunswick, Ohio and James (Darlene) Johns, Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Pamela Johns, Kingsford, Mich. and Kimberly (John) Koehler, Iron Mountain, Mich.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by one brother, David Johns and one sister, JoAnn Breszinsky.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 23, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich. Funeral services will be Saturday, 11:30 a.m., at the funeral home. Pastor Geri Hamlen will officiate. Following the services, a luncheon in her honor will be held at the American Legion, Uren Cooper-Johnson Post #50.

Memorials have been suggested to the American Foundation for the Blind in Joy’s memory.
