Obituary for Joseph J. "Joe" Negro Jr.

Iron Mountain-Joseph J. Negro, Jr., age 92, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson, Iron Mountain, Mich.

Joe was born on September 4, 1930, in Iron Mountain, Mich., son of the late Joseph and Lucy (Nagro) Negro Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School, class of 1948. He worked for his father at Negro’s Grocery Store until he entered the United States Army in January of 1952. Joe served until his honorable discharge in December of 1953, after being stationed in Japan for 16 months.

He went on to attend Michigan State University, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration with a major in accounting. He then accepted a job working in Washington DC for the United States Government in the General Accounting Office. After one year, in 1960, he returned to Iron Mountain, where he was employed as an accountant at Fleury Singler & Company until his retirement in 2013.

Joe was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain, where he was an altar server in his younger years as well as for funerals after retirement and an usher for 35 years. Joe was a member of the Dickinson Area Paisano Club and a former member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Elks Lodge and the Immaculate Conception Holy Name Society.

Joe enjoyed reading and was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Michigan State Spartans. He knew just about everyone in Iron Mountain and was the “go-to guy” for any historical information on the area.

He is survived by one sister, Patricia (Ron Christesen) Negro, Iron Mountain, Mich., and several cousins.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 14, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich. Prayers will be recited on Monday, 10:30 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. The American Legion Post #50 will accord military honors at graveside.
