Obituary for Jacqueline I. "Bammi" Rowan (Smith)
Crystal Falls- Jaqueline I. Rowan, age 90, of Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023.
Jacqui (“Bammi”) came into this world on February 25, 1932, and grew up on the northwest side of Chicago with her parents, John (Jack) and Kathryn Smith, along with her older brother, Robert “Bob.”
During the 1940s, Jacqui and her family started visiting Crystal Falls while staying at Fortune Lake, where she made many lifelong friends.
She received her certificate in nursing from Mundelein College of Chicago and was married in 1954. Shortly after, Mike, Jeanne, and Tom joined the family.
After visiting Crystal Falls consistently throughout the years, in 1993, she made the move and called Fortune Lake “home” while becoming active as a board member for Harbor House and appearing in Crystal Falls Talent Shows. She also enjoyed going to “Senior Week” at Camp Batawagama for a number of years. In the mid-1980s, she was a judge for the “Miss VJ” contest.
Christmas wouldn’t be the same if she didn’t bake hundreds of cookies every year, and it wasn’t unusual for family and friends to put in a request for various favorite cookies. She couldn’t pass an apple tree in the fall without stopping to pick some of the low-hanging apples to make them into a pie or applesauce. We spent many a July morning picking strawberries at the Kudwa Farm on Idlewild Road. A few of Jacqui’s hobbies were ceramics, baking, stained glass, Canasta, and embroidery.
In retirement, she started traveling again and enjoyed cruises to Alaska and the Bahamas, along with trips to Florida, Washington, and California.
She is survived by favorite older son, Mike; favorite daughter, Jeanne; favorite son-in-law, Lenny Pivoris; favorite younger son, Tom; and favorite grandson, Eric and favorite granddaughter-in-law, Becca, along with numerous cousins, niece, and nephews.
A summer memorial is planned for June 10, 2023, at Bewabic State Park on Fortune Lake.
