Obituary for Dr. Paul A. Jacobs

Iron Mountain- Dr. Paul A. Jacobs, 90, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023, surrounded by his family.

He was born December 13, 1932, in Iron Mountain, Mich., son of the late John and Doris (Dascola) Jacobs. Paul was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and a graduate of Iron Mountain High School, class of 1951, where he served on the National Honor Society and ran track. Following graduation, he attended Northland College and the University of Michigan, running track at both. Paul then attended the University of Detroit School of Dentistry and was named the Alumni of the Year in 1986. He practiced Dentistry in Iron River, Mich., from 1958 until 1967. Paul married Lorraine Schinderle on August 25, 1965, in Stambaugh, Mich. Paul decided in 1967 to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming an orthodontist, so he, along with his family, moved to Detroit, where he received his degree from the University of Detroit. He relocated to Iron Mountain, where he practiced orthodontics for 30 years before retiring. Paul served on the Michigan State Board of Dentistry and the National Dental Examiners Board for seven years. He and Lorraine spent over 25 years wintering in Bradenton, Florida.

Paul was an active community member over the years and was a member of numerous organizations. He served as past president of the Kiwanis Club in Iron County and received the Kiwanis International Lifetime Fellow. Paul was a past director and president of the Chippewa Club, Iron Mountain, an active member of the Alumni Club, University of Detroit School of Dentistry, the Northern Michigan University Wildcat Club, the National Rifleman’s Association, Dickinson County Wildlife Unlimited, Dickinson County Ducks Unlimited, and was featured in the “Who’s Who” in America book. Paul was a lifetime and Fourth Degree member of the Iron Mountain/Kingsford Bishop Baraga Knights of Columbus #1585. He was a lifetime member of the Iron Mountain/Kingsford Elk’s Lodge and received the National Gold Medal for Contributions to Children’s Orthodontics. He had a lifelong love for ski jumping. In 1952, he received a Gold Medal in Class B at the North American Ski Jumping Championship, Ironwood, Mich., elevating him to Class A. Paul was a past Federated International Ski Jumping judge (FIS) and was both past president and past director of the Central Ski Jumping Judges Association. He was a Distance Jumping Judge at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Paul judged the World Ski Flying Championship in Oberstdorf, Germany, the World Junior Ski Jumping Championship in Mauria, Austria, and judged the First World Cup ever held in North America in Thunder Bay, Canada. He, along with his friends, traveled to Lahti, Finland, for over 30 years as a spectator and judge and was honored with an honorary life membership to the Lahti Ski Club. Paul was a past director of the Central Ski Jumping Association. He was inducted into the US Ski Jumping Hall of Fame in 2014 in Redwing, Minnesota. Paul was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain, Mich.

He enjoyed his numerous hunting and fishing trips with his family and friends over the years, memories that he cherished and shared often. His numerous hours of training young skiers and building relationships with them were most fulfilling. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his Tuesday Golf Group. Paul will be truly missed by his family and numerous friends.

Survivors include his loving wife, Lorraine Jacobs; four children, Dr. Paul J. (Paula) Jacobs, Escanaba, Mich., Dr. Peter (Gail) Jacobs, Manistique, Mich., Perry (Denise) Jacobs, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Susan (Paul Moon) Jacobs, Iron Mountain, Mich.; brothers, Dr. Don (Sally) Jacobs, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Jack (Marion) Jacobs, Bradenton, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Dr. Bryan (Dr. Linda) Jacobs, Chicago, Ill., Dr. Allison (Ryan) Anderson, Austin, Tex., Jaclyn (Jon) Gray, Livonia, Mich., Zachary Jacobs, Iron Mountain, Mich., Nicholas (Kendra) Jacobs, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Sophia, Olivia and Cecilia Berutti, Iron Mountain, Mich.; five great-grandchildren, Lila, William and Genevieve, Chicago, Ill., Sloane Lennon, Livonia, Mich., and August Paul, Austin, Texas; and many nieces; and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Rev. Fr. Micheal Chenier will officiate. Burial will take place at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
