Obituary for Dianne Haberkorn

Dianne Haberkorn of Iron Mountain, Mic., passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023, surrounded by her family at her home. She was 78 years old.

Dianne was born September 8, 1945, to the late Amanda and Edwin Schmidt. She grew up in Milwaukee, Wisc., and graduated from Shorewood High School in 1963. Dianne then went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad. Shortly after, she met her husband, Bill Haberkorn. The two moved to Florence, Wisc. and purchased the family grocery store, Haberkorn’s Supermarket. They were married for 21 years and raised four children. Later in life, she worked as a realtor in Wisconsin and Michigan. In 1985, Dianne moved to Milwaukee, where she practiced real estate, managed the Brown Berry Bread Store, as well as other smaller endeavors. In 2016, she retired to Iron Mountain, Mich. to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Dianne was a very talented woman; there wasn’t anything she couldn’t sew. She made clothing for her family, custom drapes for her home, and her youngest daughter’s wedding dress. She even matched the junior bridesmaids’ dresses to the bridesmaids’ dresses. Dianne liked to spoil her grandchildren with handmade pajamas and Christmas outfits. She enjoyed refinishing furniture. She also enjoyed gardening; her raspberry plants were the talk of the neighborhood. Dianne was an avid reader and an amazing cook, and she liked canning her garden vegetables. She was also a Cub Scout leader and taught sewing for the 4-H club. Other hobbies she enjoyed included snowmobiling, golfing, and racquetball.

Dianne had an independent spirit and tactful way about her that served her well as she lived by herself for 40 years. She loved visits and sleepovers with her sisters, children, and grandchildren throughout those years. Her love, sense of humor, and fun will live on through them.

She is survived by three daughters: Sheri (Jeff) Peecher, Karen Counter, and Jona (Brian) Braden. She leaves behind three sisters: Carol Bradley-Beason, Joyce (Ken) Michaels, and Shirley (Tom) Mader and a brother, Jim Schmidt. Dianne is also survived by nine grandchildren: Ashley Podnar, Bridget (Nathan) Meneghini, Talor (Tim) Grossman, Morgan (Arica) Counter, Austin Hoey, Hanah (Colin) Roell, Kameron (Tony) Ward, twins Briar and Bennett Braden. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Harlow and Madison Meneghini, Salem and Emerson Counter, and Myles Roell. She leaves behind many loved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Dianne was preceded in death by her beloved son, Michael Haberkorn; her brother, Bob Schmidt; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Michaels.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain, Mich.
