Obituary for Debra M. Constantini

Iron Mountain-Debra Marie Constantini, age 65, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018, at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, Wis. with family by her side.

She was born April 6, 1953, in Iron Mountain, Mich., daughter of William “Bimbo” and June (Secinaro) Constantini. Debra attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, graduated Iron Mountain High School in 1971, and later graduated Michigan State University with a BA degree in English. In 1975, Debra returned home to teach for one year at Iron Mountain Central Junior High School. In 1976, she again returned to East Lansing, Mich. where she taught English and Journalism at East Lansing High School. In 1980, following a special internship on Lakenheath Air Force Base in England, Debra departed East Lansing with just one pair of shoes to pursue business options in Chicago, first at a personnel agency and then a promising sales job for a back-of-the truck office equipment company that eventually, under Debra’s high-performance executive management, became a multi-million dollar company. In 1989, Debra married Alan Steinberg, a professional author. In 2000, she returned to Iron Mountain where Debra managed the Constantini family’s Northside Tavern, Bimbo’s l’ Vino Torchio, transitioning, she liked to kid, “from businesswoman to butcher.” She retired when the family sold the business on Oct. 12, 2017.

A person of rare natural beauty, compassion, grace, honor, wisdom, and wit, Debra developed lifelong friendships and associations worldwide where the common perception was that her luminous soul lit up every room she entered. Boundless curiosity and willful drive to grow her knowledge and interests drew Debra constantly into new adventures, from teaching, big business, photography, lake sailing, and high-mountain skiing to hiking, horseback riding, “chef-worthy” cooking, and world travel. An avid Spartan fan, she attended both MSU Rose Bowls and participated in the annual MSU Basketball bus trip. She loved art, theater, dance, books, and film, and was a “soft-touch” for animals, especially cats, like her “2017 Pet idol Maine Coon, “Stella Bella.”

Survivors include her husband, Alan Steinberg; mother June (Secinaro) Constantini; one brother, Michael (Jean) Constantini; and a broad cross-section of devoted Iron Mountain natives, present and past.
