Iron Mountain- David Turrie, 85, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Marquette, Mich., where he spent his last months under hospice care. He was born on July 21, 1936, to the late Rudolph and Kathleen (Seymour) Turrie in Kingsford, Mich.
David was a graduate of Iron Mountain High School, class of 1954. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1954 until 1956. Afterward, he attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. In 1958 he moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and began working for American Motors. There he met the love of his life, Dawn, and they were married in 1966. He continued his career with American Motors throughout their two acquisitions until his retirement from Chrysler. He retired in 1992, and he and Dawn moved back to Iron Mountain.
David was a bigger-than-life character. He had an amazing personality and was exceptionally witty with a wonderful sense of humor. He was the proverbial life of the party. David was very kind and compassionate, as he cared for his wife Dawn for many years before her death. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. Even during his own illness, he never once complained about anything. He liked telling his Marine Corp stories most of all. He had many adventures to talk about. David also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and there was always a story about hunting camp to tell. He and Dawn loved going to the Vegas and Reno casinos. He enjoyed playing poker on his computer. He also liked watching his game shows on TV, many times getting the answers before anyone else. And he loved watching the Green Bay Packer games.
He is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline (Karl) Johnson, of Marquette, Mich.; his grandson, Ryan Johnson of Marquette. Mich.; two sisters, Marilyn Laydon and Margaret (Donald) Goudreau of Iron Mountain, Mich.; and his longtime friend, fishing and hunting buddy, John Laydon of Spread Eagle, Wis. David also had many nieces and nephews. With special thanks to David’s nephew Timmy Sundquist for always being there for him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Dawn (Stanhope) Turrie; his brother, Michael Turrie; and his sisters, Dorothy (Ray)West and Judy Swanson.
A special thank you to the Staff at UP Home Health and Hospice of Marquette for their expert care and compassion.
A private burial and celebration of life will be held in the spring.
