Obituary for Beverly Mae Carollo (Fayas)
Iron Mountain-Beverly Mae (Fayas) Carollo, age 91, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Freeman Nursing Home surrounded by family.
She was born August 15, 1928, in Iron Mountain at the 25 location, daughter of Isadore and Doris (Olson) Fayas. She never knew her father as he was killed in a hunting accident when she was two months old. Her mother Doris later married Carl Olson, when Beverly was 11 years old. She was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and a 1946 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. While in high school, Bev was a member of a quartet. They sang at many local venues. After graduation from IMHS, Bev modeled for Sakims Department Store and was hired as a telephone operator for AT&T/Michigan Bell where she worked for seven years, two of those years in Marysville, California. After her return from California, Bev started her family with Eugene R. Carollo who she married in 1951. She had 5 children and resided on Lake Antoine in the family home for over sixty years.
Beverly was a loving caregiver and devoted to her five children. She drove them to and from school, work, sporting events, dance lessons, and extracurricular activities, sometimes making 10 or more trips in a day. Sometimes she had to rush between trips earning her the nickname” Lead Foot”. She always had warm food ready for her children when they got home from school and always made enough for any company. Bev’s motto was “the more the merrier” and “there’s always room for one more”. After her mother Doris passed away, she took in her stepfather Carl and also helped her Uncle Bert and cousin Herbie Shields.
Beverly was grateful to be able to raise her children at their home on Lake Antoine Rd. Now that we are older, we all appreciate what she had to do to accomplish that. She worked whatever jobs she could to make sure we stayed in our home. She joined the Laborers Local 1329 in order to work as a cleaning lady during the Champion Mill construction. In the years she worked there the top management required that she be the one to clean their offices.
During her life she enjoyed gardening, canning her vegetables and making antipasto. It was a family project. As an avid card player many evenings were spent playing cards at Marlene Alessandrini’s, while the kids played outside. She also played bingo and for many years traveled the circuit. We remember the good times we all spent with Marge Nelson and family. We all remember Marge telling us to say “You got it from a friend!” when she would bring us clothes from a rummage sale. The Nelson kids gave her the nick name “Beverly Baby”.
This is only a small part of our mother’s life but as one can see she lived a good life. People who know her, know her kind and loving way. She taught us all the magic words “Please and Thank You” and so much more on how to treat other people. She will be missed by many. “Please” come and celebrate her life with us. If you are unable to make it, “Please” have a nice thought of her. “Thank You”.
Bev was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Iron Mountain and the Beta Sigma Nu Sorority. Bev was a member of the White Beret Drum and Bugle Core as secretary, working very hard to make Faith in Our Country Day drum and bugle events successful. Many people remember the big parades and competition at Mountaineer Stadium. Bev was also an active member of the Red Hat Society where she enjoyed many dinners and fellowship with her friends. She was a member of the “Golden Girls” group of friends that included Marge Nelson, Eleanor Frankini, Barbara Lefebvre, Helen Mueller and Ginny Torretti; they had many adventures together.
Survivors include three sons, Gene Carollo, Dean Carollo, and Jim (Lisa) Carollo ; two daughters, KayAnne (Michael) Timbrook, and Karen (Tony) Secinaro, all of Iron Mountain, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Kendra Alsteen) and Derrick Carollo, Courtney (Eric) Johnson, Anthony, Nathan and Cassandra Secinaro, Angela and Santino Carollo; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Rayce, Axyl, and Asher Carollo and her niece Linda Eyers (Mark Sweet) and nephews Randy (Maria) Eyers and Dennis Carollo and her cousins Raymond and Michael Klipsch.
In addition to her parents, Bev was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Eyers and her brother-in-law Donald Eyers.
Visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2019, 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life will be Friday, 3:00 p.m. at the church. Pastor Geri Hamlen will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, Mich.
