Obituary for Betty Jean McDowell (Sacchetti)

Kingsford - Betty Jean McDowell, 91, of Kingsford, MI., passed away Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Maryhill Manor, Niagara, WI.

She was born June 20, 1930, in Iron Mountain, MI., daughter of the late Joseph Sacchetti, Sr. and Violet (Norman) Galloway. Betty grew up in Kingsford and moved to Colorado Springs, where she graduated High School and met the love of her life, David. They were married on July 25, 1948, and moved to Kingsford, where they began their life and raised their children. Betty and David celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary before he passed in 2017.

Betty dedicated her life to raising her children, but in her early 40’s returned to college and became an LPN. She had worked many years as a Nursing Assistant at Freemans Nursing home, which gave her the courage to continue to become a nurse. She worked at Freemans for a time, then moved on to Northpointe Behavioral, where she enjoyed working with the staff and participants there until retirement. She was an active member of the First Covenant Church, Iron Mountain, and served with David as a youth group leader for many years. She enjoyed camping, travel, fishing, and rummaging, but mostly she enjoyed the time spent with family. She hosted family gatherings for every holiday, and, as one grandson said, she could serve 2-20 people without blinking an eye. She was the best cook and baker our family could have asked for. She passed on many recipes, and to this day, her family continues on with her legacy. She encouraged all of her children to do and be the best they could and encouraged them all to go to a college of some sort. Betty’s biggest concern and accomplishment were that all of her children and grandchildren knew Jesus Christ as their savior. This was passed down to her from her grandparents, Rev. George, and Edna King. She loved her family and was a proud mom and grandma; she will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her three sons, Dan (Lynn) McDowell, Farmington, Minn., Douglas (Marti) McDowell, Iron Mountain, MI., DuWayne (Julie) McDowell, Iron Mountain, MI., one daughter, Sandra (Todd) Essendrup, Iron Mountain, MI., 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Diane (Gerald) Anderson, Ellsworth, WI; and one sister-in-law, Kathy Sacchetti, of Iron Mountain, MI., as well as, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband David W. McDowell; Jr., one son, David Allen McDowell of Ellsworth, WI., and one brother, Joseph P. Sacchetti of Iron Mountain, MI.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, MI. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor James Danielson will officiate. Burial will be at Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, MI., following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Ties Adult Center, 1238 Carpenter Avenue, Iron Mountain, MI. 49801.
