Obituary for Arne O. Haavisto Jr.

Niagara- Arne O. Haavisto Jr., 72, of Niagara, Wis., passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, Mich., from a sudden cardiac arrest that he experienced while at home.

He was born February 3, 1948, in Munising, Mich., son of the late Arne O. Sr. and Aune (Maki) Haavisto. Arne grew up in Eben, Mich., and was a graduate of Eben High School, class of 1966. He excelled in basketball, winning numerous awards on the Eben High School team. On August 4, 1973, he was united in marriage to Mary Beth Hohol at St. Anthony Church, Niagara. They resided in Green Bay for a year and a half while Mary Beth completed her nursing degree. In 1974, they moved back to Niagara. Mary Beth preceded him in death on May 18, 2015.

Arne worked as a carpenter for Northern RV in Quinnesec before retiring. He also served on the Niagara Rescue Squad, was a founding member of the Tri County Horse Association, and served until his passing as the Town of Niagara Zoning Administrator. Arne was also passionate about the Niagara Historical Society, volunteering countless hours building that dream to a reality.

Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Amy (Brian) Kind, Waunakee, Wis., and two grandchildren, George and Madeline.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mary Beth, Arne was preceded in death by one brother Ronald A. (Geraldine) Haavisto, and one sister, Phyllis Gibbs.

Visitation will take place Friday, August 20, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home-Niagara Chapel, Niagara, Wis. The Memorial Mass will be Friday, 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Niagara, Wis. Rev. Fr. Quinn Mann will officiate. Burial will take place in the Niagara Cemetery, Niagara, Wis.
