Obituary for Chester S. Kusmitch

Crystal Falls-Chester S. Kusmitch, 80, of Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at his home.

He was born July 22, 1937, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Stephan and Veronica (Selak) Kusmitch. Chet grew up and graduated from Crystal Falls High School. He proudly served in the United States National Guard from 1952 until 1954 and enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1959. Chet was a member of Holy Assumption Parish in Milwaukee where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus-Holy Name in Milwaukee, and later a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Crystal Falls, where he was a past choir member. In his younger days he worked at the drug store and local bowling alley and later he ran Chet’s Carpentry. Chet worked as a union carpenter in West Allis, Wis., Norway, Mich., and Wauwatosa, Wis. He was united in marriage to Kathleen DeClark on October 14, 1961.

Chet’s hobbies included bowling, hunting, fishing, and photography. He took flying lessons at Billy Mitchell Airfield in Milwaukee, Wis. Chet was a multi engine rated pilot and had a passion for flying. He built his home on his 32 acres of land in Crystal Falls, Mich. Chet's biggest passion was his kids and grandkids.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Kathleen Kusmitch, Crystal Falls; three sons, Stephen (Jeanette) Kusmitch, Wentzville, Missouri, Dale (Angie) Kusmitch, La Crosse, Wis. and Paul (Diane) Kusmitch, Traverse City, Mich.; grandchildren, Stephen (Lindsa) Kusmitch Jr., Allison, Madeleine, Annie, Mary, Bridget, Greg, Nick, Olivia, Catherine, and Marianne Kusmitch; great-granddaughter, Heidi; one brother, John Kusmitch; one brother-in-law. Merlin Hicks; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Krause; and many special nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Chet was preceded in death by three brothers, Anthony, Joe and Peter Kusmitch; five sisters, Annie Worden, Mary Spence, Julie Hicks, Agnes Fabbri and Helen Kusmitch; brother-in-law, Raymond Krause.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 31, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Crystal Falls. Rev. Fr. Daniel Malone will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
